A poet, a former high school teacher, Dr. Pierre Wilbert Orelus, is an associate professor in the Curriculum and Instruction Department at New Mexico State University (NMSU) where he co-coordinated and coordinated the Bilingual and TESOL program for over two years. Orelus has published 8 books and numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters since completing his doctorate from University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2008. In praising Dr. Orelus’ for his book, The Agony of Masculinity, the acclaimed African American public intellectual Cornel West stated, ” Orelus is an intellectual freedom fighter whose deep insights and sharp analyses of institutional racism and black masculinity deserve our attention.”

Dr. Orelus is currently the Co-chair of the Paulo Freire SIG (Special Interest Group) and the past Chair of the Post-colonial and Education SIG at American Educational Research Association. Professor Orelus’ research interests include the politics of language; race, gender, and culture studies;  “post-colonial,” and immigrant/transnational studies; bi-literacy; and critical pedagogy.  Dr. Orelus has been invited both as a guest and keynote speaker by major national conferences, such as CABE (California Association of Bilingual Education), and several U.S. colleges and universities, such as Mount-Holyoke college, Bates college, Keene State College, and University of Massachusetts at Amherst, to talk about his work.  Dr. Orelus has been granted many awards and fellowships.
